First-Year Yale College Students

We are so happy to have you join the Yale University community! As you go through your first year at Yale, it’s important to make sure you are set up appropriately with our office. Now that you are enrolled, it’s your responsibility to request accommodations with our office, which may have been different than in your previous schooling.  The following steps will help you start that process.

Steps to Requesting Accommodations:

1. Complete the Registration form

2. Academic Accommodations: Provide supporting documentation  (see Documentation Guidelines).

3. Housing Accommodations: Provide the Housing Form completed by your current medical provider.

4. Meet with a SAS staff member to discuss your request and current situation, and to develop a plan for moving forward.

What to Expect:

Once you submit the Registration Form, SAS will reach out to you to discuss accommodations over the summer (June and July). For housing requests, please see information below.

During our first meeting, we will discuss your needs, accommodations history, and implementation of accommodations while at Yale. We will not discuss all details outlined in your documentation. We are not clinicians and do not expect the same level of information. Please keep in mind that SAS staff are sensitive to disability needs. Generally, your information is kept confidential and only your approved accommodations are shared with faculty and administrators.

The determination of accommodations can be an ongoing process. We will create an accommodation plan for you at our first meeting but are open to further discussions about your needs.

You are making an exciting transition from high school to Yale University. Please review some common differences between the accommodations process in high school and Yale University.

First-year Housing:

To ensure a student can access housing appropriately, the SAS works with students in need of housing accommodations. For example, a student might request a physically accessible suite or the presence of medical equipment in their room. To request housing accommodations for your first-year, you must:

  • 1. Complete the Registration form.
  • 2. Provide the Housing Form completed by your current medical provider.
  • DEADLINE TO SUBMIT HOUSING DOCUMENTATION FOR FALL 2021 IS TUESDAY, May 11th, 11:59 p.m. (EST)

You must submit your completed request (documentation included) by the deadline date indicated on the Housing and Advising Form

If submitted by the deadline, the Housing Committee will review your request and eligibility. Once housing assignments are finalized and made public, you will be notified of the Committee decision. A timely response is especially important because once a rooming assignment has been made, it will not be possible to change it.

Placement Exams:

Students with documented disabilities may request accommodations for placement testing through SAS. Please complete our registration form and upload documentation at least two weeks in advance of the exam. SAS will review and contact you.

Please note that these requests for accommodations apply to the placement testing period alone. To register for ongoing accessibility arrangements, students should submit a request and meet with SAS before the start of the semester.
