Overview:

The Academy: Faculty and Accessible Course Materials is a 4-week collaborative learning program designed to empower Yale faculty with the knowledge and skills to create more accessible course materials. Through weekly 30-minute sessions, faculty will work one-on-one with a Graduate Accessibility Assistant from the Student Accessibility Services (SAS) team.

Program Structure

Each week, faculty will meet for 30 minutes with their assigned Graduate Accessibility Assistant. These sessions are focused, hands-on, and tailored to the faculty member’s specific course content.

The Graduate Accessibility Assistant will review and remediate selected course materials in advance of each meeting. During the session, they will:

  • Demonstrate the accessibility issues found.
  • Explain the corrections made.
  • Teach the faculty member how to address the most significant issue themselves.

With each session, faculty will gain confidence and competence in creating accessible materials. The goal is for faculty to independently apply accessibility best practices to their content by the end of the program.

Participants will receive curated resources to support their learning and will be connected with the university’s Digital Accessibility Specialist for continued training and support after the program concludes.

Outcomes

  • Improved accessibility of course materials.
  • Improved educational access for students with disabilities.
  • Increased faculty awareness and capability in digital accessibility.
